Your Company’s Reputation Always Precedes You When Hiring

In a previous article we discussed the current gap between employee supply and demand, we mentioned the idea that the high-quality job candidates that do exist aren’t on the market for long.

That is, since they’re in such high demand, the “ball is in their court,” in terms of finding the company that offers the best possible opportunity to them. In other words, since they’re presented with so many choices, they’re highly likely to ignore the ones that don’t match their expectations.

This means you have your work cut out for you in terms of catching the attention of these high-quality professionals, and in terms of proving to them that choosing to work with your organization will be the best possible choice they could have made for their career.

Of course, that doesn’t mean doing so is impossible. You just need to be strategic in your approach. Here’s how to get started.

4 Ways To Showcase Your Company

1. Assess Your Current Employee’s Outlook

Your first order of business should be to look inward in order to understand how your current employees feel about your organization.

(As we’ll get to in a moment, “faking” your organization’s value is a huge no-no.)

You can do this in a number of structured and unstructured ways:

  • Conducting surveys (such as employee NPS surveys)
  • Conducting end-of-year assessments
  • Engaging in conversation with individual employees

The goal, here, is to gain a true understanding of what your employees love about working with your organization – and where there’s room for improvement. Needless to say, you’ll want to immediately begin improving any shortcomings that may come to your attention.

2. Be Authentic – Internally and Externally

As we said above, being “fake” in any way is a great way to turn off potential employee candidates.

For example, let’s say TOMS Shoes, which is famous for its charitable 1-for-1 initiative, actually wasn’t donating as many shoes as it claims to. Not only would this look bad from the consumer’s perspective, but it would also likely make potential applicants not want to have anything to do with the company.

While that’s a rather drastic example, the point is that you definitely don’t want to misrepresent what your company stands for – be it charitable giving, innovation, flexibility, or anything else – when attempting to attract new employees.

Whether they figure you out immediately, or sometime down the road, the end result will be the same:

Wasted time, money, and energy on the part of both sides.

3. Show Your Appreciation

It’s no secret that the modern employee values being appreciated, and appreciates being valued.

While proper monetary compensation, benefits, and paid time off are definitely a huge part of the equation, you also want your potential employees to know that your organization sees them as more than just a number that can easily be replaced.

Compared to a short few decades ago, job security isn’t exactly guaranteed in most industries – and employees know this. So, perhaps one of the best ways to show your appreciation for your potential employees is to showcase your investment into their professional growth, with the promise that their hard work and diligence will equate to job security in one way or another.

Again: It’s essential that your potential employees know you see them as people first, employees second.

4. Showcase Proof

How, exactly, are you supposed to prove all this?

Simple: Get your current employees on board.

Since you’ll now have a pretty good idea of how specific employees feel about working within your organization, tap into your most-satisfied employees to see if they’d be happy to spread the good word about your company.

This may mean:

  • Creating content revolving around the positive culture of your company
  • Developing events and other celebrations revolving around your company (or a specific initiative your company champions)
  • Soliciting employee referrals, and requesting your employees reach out to others in their network regarding potential opportunities

To be sure, potential candidates will certainly trust the word of your current employees more than they’ll trust anything you have to say about your organization. If you can get your current team members to spread positive info about your company, you’ll easily enhance your organization’s reputation in the eyes of potential applicants.
