How Do You Find Top Candidates For an Available Position?

Finding the perfect employee has never been easier. It’s also never been so difficult.

Confused? Let us explain.

The advent of the internet, along with social media and networking sites, online job boards and the like provide the ability to connect with prospective employees from around the world at the click of a button.

Of course, because the pool of potential hires is so large, it can take much more effort to pick the best candidate than it would if you were to limit your options.

By approaching the situation strategically, you’ll find that having a large pool to choose from is a good thing.

Here’s how to do it.

Know What You’re Looking For

When dealing with a small pool of candidates, you’ll probably be able to quickly tell which one is the best fit for the position. However, just because this person is the best choice doesn’t mean they’re the perfect employee.

With so many qualified individuals to choose from given the wide reach of the internet, you can realistically begin searching for the absolute best person for the job. But first, you have to know exactly what makes someone perfect for a specific position.

On the positive end of things, think of the qualifications and qualities of your ideal candidate. What past experiences do they have? What have they accomplished throughout their career? What characteristics will they need to succeed in the position?

On the negative side, what characteristics or shortcomings would you consider deal-breakers? Think about potential red flags that could signal to you a certain person is not right for the job. This can help you narrow down the field to a select few individuals.

Know Where to Look

We mentioned before the many areas of the web where you’re likely to find job seekers. But not all of these places will turn up top-quality professionals.

To find candidates who take their job search (and career) seriously, look on sites that require paid subscriptions or other fees. Look for individuals who are willing to invest money into furthering their careers – not just people who reply to any and all job postings out there.

Of course, you can still take your search offline. Consider tapping into your current network of family members, friends, and colleagues. Check out networking events and conventions in your area. The pool will obviously be smaller when using these methods, but you never know where you might find the perfect employee.

Heighten Your Scrutiny

Once you’ve narrowed down your search to a handful of candidates, take your vetting one step further.

Consider how your goals align with those of your potential employees. Are they looking for a job, or are they looking to make a career? Are they invested in your cause, or will they simply do “good enough” when on the clock?

Similarly, consider how their personality jibes with yours. If an individual isn’t a good fit for the company culture, it won’t matter how talented they are – you’re bound to hit some snags.

And, if it comes down to two equally qualified and vetted candidates, there’s nothing wrong with going with your gut. If your instincts tell you to go in a certain direction – all other factors being equal – go with them.
