3 Ways to Get the Job That You Really Want

Everyone needs a job. That much we know. But so many of us end up working in a job that simply pays the bills – and not much else. While there’s nothing wrong with taking any job you can in order to scrape by, keeping said job for the long term just isn’t sustainable. If you want to be truly happy, you need to find a career that’s right for you. To make it happen, though, you’re going to need to change the way you approach the process.

Play the Long Game

As we said in the intro, you might not find the job you want right from the get-go. That’s totally fine. In fact, it’s probably more likely that you’ll find yourself in this scenario than you are to just fall into your dream job with little to no effort. But that doesn’t mean you stop looking for that dream job after you’ve locked up a temporary gig.

Instead, you play the long game.

In other words, you stay vigilant. You rearrange your time so that, when you’re not working, you’re looking for the job that will actually keep you happy and fulfilled. Not only that, but you also want to know what you’ll need to know, and what you’ll need to be able to do, in order to keep this dream job – and move up in the ranks. This might mean taking college courses at night, or volunteering for an organization that better fits your goals. Not only will this make you more marketable, but it can also allow you to meet others who can help you reach your goals more efficiently.

Speaking of that…

Use Your Network

You’ve most likely heard the phrase “it’s not what you know, it’s who you know.”

While that’s not necessarily true, growing your network is essential to a job hunt for a number of reasons.

For one thing, your friends, family members, and peers can help you keep a lookout for open positions in your field or organization of choice. Even if they aren’t in a position to introduce you to a new employer, they’ll still be able to notify you as soon as they hear anything – allowing you to quickly pounce on the opportunity on your own.

Ideally, though, you’ll have people in your network that actually know individuals looking to hire someone with your qualifications for the type of job you’ve been looking for. This way, you may be able to meet prospective employers in a more candid, low-risk environment like a coffeehouse (rather than in a formal office setting in which stakes are high).

Simply put:

The more people you know, the more opportunities you’ll be able to find. Keep this in mind as you continue looking for your dream job.

Go Outside Your Comfort Zone

To be blunt:

If finding a specific job was easy for you to do, that job is probably well below what you’re capable of. On the other hand, finding the job you really want is going to take some effort. As mentioned, you might have to make some sacrifices (such as your free time), and you might have to take some risks (trying something new). But the result – finding a job you actually love waking up early to go to every day of your life – is absolutely worth pushing yourself past whatever self-imposed limits you’ve been held back by for so long.
