Why A Good Social Media Presence Is Needed During Your Job Search

There’s no denying that the internet has revolutionized the way in which we search for jobs.

On that same token, it’s also changed the way in which employers seek out and vet potential employees, as well; there’s certainly no shortage of stories about how an off-the-cuff social media post or out-of-context picture ended up completely ruining an individual’s professional reputation.

Now, there was a time in recent memory in which the best option was to simply have no online presence at all. By today’s (and tomorrow’s) standards, though, this is all but impossible; as long as you’ve utilized the internet at least once in your life, you’ll have left some kind of digital footprint behind.

But that isn’t necessarily a bad thing. In fact, your online presence can actually be an asset when looking for a new job. Let’s take a look at some of the reasons this is.

3 Ways a Positive Internet Presence Can Be Beneficial to Your Job Search

As we said before, a poor internet presence can absolutely ruin your chances of getting hired in a certain position; but a positive presence can help you stand out even more.

Here’s why:

#1: It’s a Glimpse Into Your “Real” Personality

The irony of using the internet is that, even though we all know that whatever we put “out there” is logged somewhere forever, many of us still believe we remain anonymous when doing so.

Or, at the very least, we rationalize putting certain information out on the web by saying it’s “not really who we are,” or that it’s just our “internet personality.”

The truth, of course, is that our “internet personality” basically exposes who we are when we think nobody’s looking – even though we know that, at any given time, anyone with an internet connection can see us.

With this in mind, it’s clear that having a positive internet presence reflects very highly on you, in that it shows you always act with integrity and professionalism – even when acting in relative anonymity.

#2: Self-Awareness and Responsibility

Piggybacking off of the last point, a positive online presence is also a sign that you’re aware of the fact that anything you put “out there” is “there” for good – or, at least, for a very long time.

As we mentioned before, even posts, comments, and images that are taken out of context can ruin a person’s online (and real-world) reputation. Sometimes, these things can come about through no fault of the individual (for example, an acquaintance might “tag” you in a picture or video that crosses all sorts of societal lines). Even still, this can lead to terrible consequences on your end.

That being said, a spotless internet presence will show that you understand the importance of upkeeping this presence, and your ability to deal with certain situations in a professional and responsible manner.

#3: Showcasing Your Knowledge and Abilities

So far, we’ve mainly talked about mitigating problems with your online presence.

But it’s also important to realize that you can add to your positive online image, as well. There are a number of platforms and channels – from blogging sites to portfolio services – that enable you to showcase your professional abilities in an organized and presentable manner.

In taking full advantage of these platforms, you make it possible for potential employers to stumble onto your professional profiles before you even reach out to them. In doing so, you potentially open a number of doors that, hopefully, lead you to the career of your dreams.
