Why The IT Industry Continues To Be a Great Industry To Find A Job

There’s no doubt about it:

Entering the information technology industry in 2018 is a smart decision.

Current Data

According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, the IT sector, on the whole, is projected to increase by 13% from 2016-2026 – a little less than double the projected growth for all industries. As the IT industry is already quite large to begin with, this 13% growth is expected to add over 500,000 jobs to the workforce. Additionally, according to Data USA, only about 20,000 individuals graduated with a degree in information technology in 2015; in other words, there will certainly be enough open positions to go around over the next decade.

The IT field is also way above average in terms of yearly compensation, as well. Although the median salary across all industries in the US hovers around $37,000, IT specialists can expect to make – at worst – almost double this figure. Of the most popular and needed IT positions, the median salary of web developers – the lowest paid of the bunch – is $66,130. On the higher end of the spectrum, computer and information research scientists made a median of $111,840 in 2016.

As if the job outlook and higher-than-average compensation weren’t enough to persuade you toward the IT field, entering the field in the first place is also quite attainable (as long as you’re willing to work for it, of course!).

Career Options

Some IT positions – such as web developer and site designer – only require an Associate’s degree (and, in some cases, simply an equivalency will suffice). In other words, you could be well on your way to a salary that’s almost double the national median in as little as two years!

Of course, as you go up the ladder, so to speak, you’ll be required to undertake additional training and education. Most other IT-related positions – such as system administrators, software developers, and support specialists – require applicants to have a Bachelor’s degree in a related field.

The aforementioned research scientist position is the only one (out of the most popular and in-demand) that typically requires a Master’s degree. Of course, the hefty salary these specialists earn is certainly worth the extra time and effort.

While certainly not for everyone, the IT field can offer a rewarding, challenging, and lucrative career for those who enjoy working with – and even creating – the latest advancements in technology.
