What Is the Best Path to A Job You Really Want?

As kids, many of us grew up thinking that our dream job – and the life that comes with it – would just “happen” once we got older. Of course, as you probably know by now, this couldn’t be further from the truth. For one thing, finding our dream job in the first place is incredibly difficult – requiring a ton of work, and a lot of luck, too.

Not only that, but the reality is that, quite often, our “dream job” isn’t exactly what we thought it would be. At any rate, it’s still incredibly important that you continue on a path to a successful and happy career and life. Of course, you need to know how to do that, in the first place.

Tips For Finding A Job You Want

Tip #1: Consider What You Want Out of Life

Perhaps the most important thing to think about when forging a path to the job of your dreams is: What do you really want to do with your life?

Consider your main sources of motivation, and go from there. Are you looking to make a ton of money? Or is a work-life balance important to you? Do you want to make a difference in the lives of others – even if it means sacrificing part of your own life?

Now, this might be rather easy to figure out with regard to the person you are today. But it’s rather difficult to determine what you’ll want from life ten, twenty, even thirty years down the road. Of course, the path you begin today leads you to where you’ll be in these coming years, so it’s important to take stock in your goals for the future – even if the future seems like a long way off.

Tip #2: Find the Intersection of Your Skills and Passions

While your passions should certainly be a part of what drives you on your career path, it, unfortunately, can’t be the driving factor. (If it was, we’d all still be trying to get drafted as a first-round quarterback…)

More important, of course, are your marketable skills – the abilities that will essentially enable you to make a decent living. But, that doesn’t mean you should completely neglect your passions, either.

Instead, look for ways you can channel these marketable skills into areas you’re passionate about. Or, even if you end up working in a career you don’t necessarily love – but are really good at – make sure it enables you to have time enough to do the things you do love.

Tip #3: Check the Logistics

Now, there are a few things that are going to be completely out of your hands. And that’s okay – as long as you anticipate them before heading off on a path that ends up going nowhere.

For starters, take the time to determine what you’ll need to do to attain the job you’re looking for. You might need to graduate from a specific program, earn a specific certification, or simply attain some additional training. Without these qualifications, though, no amount of passion is going to get you hired.

Secondly, take a look at the outlook for the job or career you have in mind. When doing so, there are two things to keep in mind. For one thing, you’ll want to be sure there will be a continued demand for the job in the near future – or, at the very least, that the skills you’ll attain through said job will enable you to do other things. Also, consider how the scope of the job may change over time. As we alluded to earlier, there’s always the possibility that the job you think you want to do for the rest of your life ends up being something completely different a few years down the road.

To be clear, there really is no “best path” to any certain job or career. The truth is, as long as you continue to consciously forge ahead and always know why you’re continuing to take the path you’re on, you should have no problem getting where you truly want to be.
