How to Strategically Visualize a Great Accounting Career

When you have a goal or an ambition, one of the best ways to get there is to visualize yourself there. Think about what your life and career will look like when you’ve reached the right point. If nothing else, it’s motivating. For example, when you’re burnt out from all the hard work you’ve been taking on or studying for your CPA exam, that image of you successfully attaining your goals as an accountant can spur you to keep going. Instead of giving up or procrastinating when you feel overwhelmed, you’ll be inspired to continue working in the direction of your goals.

Tips for Growing Your Accounting Career

1. Visualize your goals

The Panther Group fills jobs in accounting and billing, accounting managers, accounts payable and receivable, accounts payable and receivable supervisors, auditors, controllers, and bookkeepers. Let us show you some of the options available in the accounting field. These options can lead to positive imagery—what will your life look like once you have a successful career here? Let those positive images inspire you.

2. Be realistic

Your goals have to be realistic. If your goals are too lofty, you’ll set yourself up for failure. Break your larger goal into smaller steps so that these smaller achievements keep you motivated.

3. Have a backup plan

Eventually, you’ll hit a setback on your career path, and to keep going, you need to have a plan for this. Remember that they’re learning opportunities and chances for you to grow. What could you have done better? How can you improve for the future?

4. Learn positive self-talk

You’re responsible for encouraging yourself, braving the next steps in the face of failure, and reminding yourself that each challenge is an opportunity to test your skills and learn new ones. If you let yourself down in this and start telling yourself that it’s too hard and you’ll never be able to do it, that will become truth. Without the positive self-talk, you’ll fail. Your anxiety and your doubt overcome you.

5. Establish a routine

A routine can help you stay focused and disciplined. You might need to work preparing for your CPA exam into your routine. Or meeting with a CPA mentor who can provide you with insight as you tackle challenges and face similar issues. Or networking with other accounting professionals and hiring managers who might be able to point you in the right direction of a new opportunity. Remember that many employment opportunities are never even posted online because they’re filled through referrals. And stay apprised of changing technologies—you need to know how to use Excel, SAP, Microsoft Dynamics, Oracle, Cognos, and Crystal reports, along with many other Continuing Professional Education (CPE) requirements.

6. Treat yourself

And don’t forget to celebrate even the smallest of your achievements! These treats, no matter how small or simple, are something to keep you motivated and moving in the right direction.
