How Can You Embrace the Future of Work and Expand Your Career Opportunities?   The Panther Group

The Covid-19 pandemic led many people to reconsider their career choices. A job that seemed ideal for the long-term might have lost some of its luster with more time to consider other options. They wondered if there were opportunities that would pay more, be more fulfilling or offer more personal and professional rewards. If you’re ready to rethink your career, where do you start?

Looking To Join the Future of Work?

Review Your Career Path

Examine what you like about your current position and what you don’t. Do you like the field but not the role? Has your career taken the trajectory you expected? Is that good or bad? If you’re not happy with the track you’re on, would a lateral move, new skills or additional education get you where you want to go?

Make a Lateral Move

Look for similar roles within your company and outside. Often, ambitious people look for the next rung on the career ladder without considering if they are on the right ladder. Break down your skills and think about how you can use them effectively in various departments. It can open your career options. Start with a review of any posted jobs on your company website and a discussion with your manager. Chances are, they’d rather lose you from the department than the company and will be happy to help. If this proves to be a dead-end, you can always reach out to a recruiter.

Learn New Skills

If you want to shift your career, it may take additional skills. Look at job listings – even if you’re not currently qualified. Reviewing job requirements for your dream job can help you see where you are lacking and how you can close the gap. Use it as a sort of to-do list to make yourself the ideal candidate. It could be as simple as learning software on YouTube or free online training or as significant an investment of time and money as returning to school for an advanced degree. It’s up to you to decide if the commitment is worth it for your career ambitions. Even if you’re not making a big move, online courses can give you a competitive edge over other candidates.

Advance your Education

What will it take to make you eligible for the jobs of the future? Do you need to earn a graduate degree, add a relevant certification, learn to code? Investigate your resources. You may find what you need through community colleges or local universities. You may be able to take some or all of your classes online. Do your due diligence before committing. Beware of predatory for-profit institutes that can easily be mistaken for accredited colleges.

Make a Compete Career Change

It’s never too late to reinvent yourself. Some of the most famous success stories are of people who reinvented themselves in their thirties, forties or fifties! You only live once. Why spend it in a job that’s not the right fit. This is especially true if you are working in a dying industry and may need to take a fresh approach to keep your career vital and growing as long as you want to work.

Not sure what direction you want your career to take? Try a contract or contract-to-hire position to see what it’s like before fully committing. The pandemic caused many people to rethink their careers, including where and how they work. Increasingly, companies are adding remote and hybrid positions to their workforce. Will this make a difference to your career choices?
