When you’re looking for a new job, there are plenty of things that make the search harder and longer than needed sometimes. Here are several ways to make your search better and overcome common job seeker pain points.
5 Pain-Points You Can Overcome During Your Job Search
Pain Point: I feel like my resume is getting lost in the shuffle.
Our Suggestion: Update Your Resume With Keywords
When you submit your resume along with an application, most career sites will match up keywords in your resume with jobs or employer searches. Make sure the elements of your resume include skills, experiences and education that are relevant to the job that you want. Clearly, you shouldn’t make anything up on your resume, but, you should be strategic with the words that you are including in your resume. For example, you can include great keywords in a well-phrased description of your last role.
Pain Point: I’m applying to a ton of jobs and not getting good responses to my applications.
Our Suggestion: Apply to the source!
If you’re applying to a lot of jobs on larger job aggregators, consider applying directly through companies’ websites. While sites like Indeed and others like it are excellent sources for finding opportunities, you may find that when you apply directly to a company’s website, the communication process improves. While we, at the Panther group, do post jobs to career sites like Indeed, we also have our own career portal, and our process for matching candidate and opportunities is highly accurate.
Paint Point: I don’t feel like the time I’m spending on applications is paying off.
Our Suggestion: Be Picky With Where You Apply!
Quality over quantity is our suggestion. There are so many jobs available, that it’s possible to get stuck in the mode of applying to too many jobs that you can’t keep track of them all. Our suggestion is to choose your career jobs, make a short list of job titles you will apply to, and stick to that list.
Pain Point: I’m worried that I’ll be settling for a sub-par job if I accept a job too quickly.
Our Suggestion: Work with a recruiter or staffing firm you trust.
Buyers’ remorse can also be felt during the job search. A job doesn’t always turn out to be what was advertised. Perhaps the job was, but you spotted a better opportunity soon after. Here’s the reality, if you stay at a job you dislike, it most likely won’t get better. We recommend working with a recruiter from our team to identify job opportunities that may be a good fit, go through the interview process, and you decide if it’s a good fit. You’ll have the benefit of a recruiter in your corner, and better exposure to companies that are vetted by the recruiter.
Pain Point: Communication isn’t great when I apply for a job.
Our Suggestion: Remember that online applications are digital inquiries. Communicate Other Ways Too!
If you want the job, go analog, Pick up the phone, call the company, and express your interest. While some companies may then redirect you back to the digital application, taking the initiative to start the conversation on your terms can play in your favor. Also remember that email updates from companies are often mass emails that will not give you a response if you try sending a message back.
