What Are Your Career Goals and What is Your Plan For Getting There?

Aside from earning a living wage, we all have a number of different goals we’d like to accomplish throughout our career.

While these career goals vary from person to person, the strategies we all can use to attain them are all quite similar:

Define Success on Your Terms

Above all else, never let anyone but yourself define what success means to you.

For one person, success means earning a huge salary.

For another, it’s making a difference in society.

Others might define success as earning enough to make a living while still having enough time to actually enjoy it.

Figure out what you want out of life, and it’ll be much easier to set out on a path that will lead to it.

Think Big

You’ll never achieve your goals if you don’t truly believe you can.

When figuring out what you want to get out of life, don’t hold back. Think of the absolute best-case scenario. Envision what it will look and feel like once you’ve gotten there you want to be. Then picture where you’ll go from there.

At the risk of sounding too much like an after-school special, the sky’s the limit – if you allow it to be.

Make a Plan

It’s not enough to just picture yourself attaining success. You have to know how you’re going to get there.

Create a mission statement that not just defines your goals, but also the steps you’ll take on your path to success.

Know where you’ll need to be in one year, five year, ten years, and even further down the line. Then, break it down even further into months, weeks, and even days. This will help you keep track of where you are, where you want to be, and what you’re doing to get there.

Review and Revise Your Plan

You’ve heard the saying “the best-laid plans of mice and men go oft awry,” right?

It’s true – not everything will go according to plan. And that’s okay.

From time to time, assess your progress. What have you been doing well? How could you improve? What do you need to do to stay on track?

Revisit these questions every month or so to ensure you don’t stray from your path. Though the path to success may be long and, at times, difficult, it’ll be worth it in the end.
