Career Development Tips _ The Panther Group

Are you just starting off in your career?  Are you a few years in? Are you a veteran in your industry? Do you know what it takes to grow your career strategically?  Here are a few career development pieces of advice that we recommend examining further.

7 Career Development Tips

1. Plan on Learning Strategically Throughout Your Career

Continuous learning may not be practical in your career, however, being open to learning new skills can be vital to your career.  Additionally, finding your own learning streams and modes can prepare you for the next step or propel you into that next step.

2. Network With the Right People

There are many statistics that prove the value of strategic networking.

More than 1/3 of professionals reported that casual networking conversations led to new opportunities. (LinkedIn’s data)

Referrals make up 40% of all professional hires (Jobvite)

Whether  you  spend time networking on social media or in person, this can be one of the most valuable tools in your career toolbox.

3. Utilize Mentors Throughout Your Career

Asking someone to mentor you can be a humbling experience, however, the benefits of gleaning wisdom from someone with more experience can do the following:

  • Help you spot (the right) opportunities
  • Help you avoid common personal, career, and industry pitfalls
  • Guide your thought process to be more efficient
  • Provide focus on the skills that you will actually need to acquire

4. Visualize Your Next Steps

While planning out your career can seem daunting, knowing at least what you want out of the next step can bring clarity and focus to what you are doing today.  Knowing a goal can help you stay focused on activities that will help you accomplish that goal.

5. Plan But Stay Flexible

While planning out your career is smart, you may be surprised by opportunities that you never thought of. Here are some quotes to get you motivated to plan (and plan for surprises)!

“An hour of planning can save you 10 hours of doing.” Dale Carnegie.

“Growth and comfort do not coexist.”  Ginni Rometty

“There are dreamers and there are planners; the planners make their dreams come true.” Edwin Louis Cole

“Plans are nothing; planning is everything.”  Dwight D. Eisenhower

“I always did something I was a little not ready to do. I think that’s how you grow. When there’s that moment of ‘Wow, I’m not really sure I can do this,’ and you push through those moments, that’s when you have a breakthrough.” Marissa Mayer

6. Embrace Challenges

Kobe Bryant said, “Everything negative -pressure,  challenges – is all an opportunity for me to rise.”   When you face career challenges, your mindset matters tremendously.

Morgan Freeman is quoted as saying, “challenge yourself; it’s the only path which leads to growth.”

If you’re looking to grow your career, find opportunities and situations that challenge your skills and perspective.  This can spark growth in many ways including professionally.

7. Learn From Pitfalls and Treat Wins Like Career Fuel

While you may find ways to challenge yourself to grow, there will always be situations that you did not or could not avoid that you wish you could have.  These pitfalls can be opportunities to learn better paths and actions to take further down your career.  Additionally, when you experience successes use those successes to fuel further growth instead of sitting back on your laurels. Stephen Covey said, “we develop charter muscles by overcoming challenges and obstacles.” That character growth often translates into career growth as well.
